Professor Sir John Bell to be quizzed by Lords on Life Sciences Industrial Strategy

The author of the Life Sciences Industrial Strategy report to Government, Professor Sir John Bell, will face questioning by the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee on Tuesday 5 December.

Sir John's report seeks to provide the Government with recommendations which will ensure the long term success of the life sciences sector. It states that if these recommendations are implemented, the strategy will “emerge as a dynamic set of actions that will ensure the most desirable outcomes for the economy, industry and the NHS”.

The Committee will ask Sir John how the strategy should be implemented and whether the goal of making the UK attractive to global life sciences investors can be achieved.

The evidence session will begin at 10:10am in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords.

Further questions the Committee are likely to ask include:

  • Industry has expressed frustration at the slow uptake of new medicines by the NHS, the difficulty of collaborating with the NHS and the NHS's poor record of adopting innovation. What are the solutions?
  • When is it expected that the life sciences sector deal will be published and what would you like it to contain?
  • What effect will Brexit have on the implementation of the strategy?
  • We have heard evidence that the goal of four companies in life sciences with market capitalisation of £20bn in the next 10 years is extremely ambitious considering the UK's track record and the problems facing the sector. How can this goal can be met?
