Is the Government ready to make tax digital for small businesses?
House of Lord Committee to quiz HMRC and HM Treasury on digital tax plans.
On Wednesday 22 February 2017 officials from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and HM Treasury will give evidence to the House of Lords Economic Affairs Finance Bill Sub-Committee.
Their evidence will be on the Government's proposals to Make Tax Digital.
At 3.30pm the Committee will hear from:
- Theresa Middleton, Programme Director, Making Tax Digital (Business), HMRC
- Jim Harra, Director General, Customer Strategy and Tax Design, HMRC
- Lucy Pink, Deputy Director, Tax Administration Spending and Reform, HM Treasury
They will be asked questions including:
- How much will it cost small businesses to move to a digital system? Why do accountants and small businesses think the cost will be much higher than the Government's assessment predicts?
- Will the costs of moving to digital system force businesses into the shadow economy?
- Is it realistic to start the scheme in April 2018? Is there enough time for a full pilot?
- What free software will be available to businesses?
- What will HMRC do to make sure small businesses are aware of the changes and support them?
- Which businesses should be exempt?
This evidence session will take place at 3.30pm on Wednesday 22 February 2017 in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords.
