Energy secretary to face Lords committee questions
On Tuesday 10 January 2017 the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee will hear evidence from the Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
This evidence session is part of the Committee's inquiry into ‘The Economics of UK Energy Policy'. Jeremy Pocklington, BEIS's Director General of Energy and Security will also be giving evidence.
Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:
- Has the Government got the balance between affordability, security of supply and decarbonisation right?
- Is the Hinkley Point deal good value for money? What will happen if it is not built on time?
- Why do UK energy intensive businesses face amongst the highest industrial electricity prices in Europe?
- Is the UK's energy supply secure? Does the increasing reliance on intermittent renewable sources of energy affect this security?
- Should the UK spend more on research and development?
- Should the Government step back and encourage a competitive electricity market?
- Should Ofgem be given more powers to ensure competition in the market?
The Committee is exploring the present mix of policy interventions and subsidies in the energy market. The core question which it is seeking to answer is: “What are the failures, if any, in the energy market and what measures are needed to correct them?”
The evidence session will take place at 3.35pm on Tuesday 10 January 2017 in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
