Will technology change how our laws are made? Lords Committee to ask leading academic
The House of Lords Constitution Committee will this week take evidence from Professor Richard Susskind OBE, a leading expert on the impact of technology on the work of lawyers and IT Advisor to the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales.
The evidence session will start at 10:30am on Wednesday 11 January in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords.
Areas the session will cover include:
- How will technology impact on the process of making laws beyond the simple automation of processes.
- Why the legislative process has seen less computerisation than aspects of the law such as the courts.
- The risks associated with moving toward a more high-tech process of making laws.
- How we can prepare for possible long-term technological changes such as automatic drafting of legislation, systems that identify the need for legislative change based on monitoring the mood of the nation and citizens receiving personalised information about legislative changes.
- Whether new technologies which give citizens a greater role in the legislative process risk undermining representative democracy.
