Government fails to address concerns of Lords Committee on future of UK's trade with the EU
“Repetitive”, “did not address the issues” and “not addressed with the appropriate level of rigour and analysis”.
This is how the House of Lords External Affairs and Internal Market Sub-Committees described the Government's response to the sub-committees 'Brexit: the options for trade report', published in December 2016.
The Chairs of both sub-committees have now written to the Government to express their disappointment at the quality of its response to this important report.
Baroness Verma, Chairman of the EU External Affairs Sub-Committee, said:
“We've written to Lord Bridges and Lord Price to express our disappointment and concern at the Government's response to our report, which the Committees felt was poor, suggesting that the Government is not taking our concerns seriously.
“We have asked for clarification on a number of issues contained in the letter. This includes whether a time-limited transitional arrangement or membership of the EEA at any point in the future is being considered. The issue of the border with Ireland or dispute resolution mechanisms were also not adequately addressed.”
