Lords EU Committee continue probe into Brexit and devolution with evidence from former Scottish First Minister
The House of Lords EU Committee will this week continue its inquiry into the potential impact of Brexit on devolution in the UK with evidence from former First Minister of Scotland, Lord McConnell.
The evidence session will start at 2pm on Tuesday 28 March in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
Areas the session will cover include:
- The implications for Scotland and the other devolved nations of the UK Government's position on the Brexit negotiations as set out in the Prime Minister's Lancaster House speech.
- Whether it will be possible for Scotland to have a differential relationship with the EU while remaining part of the UK.
- What impact will Nicola Sturgeon's announcement that she will seek a second independence referendum have on the Brexit negotiations?
- As powers are returned from Brussels to the UK, which should transfer to the Scottish Parliament and which should stay in Westminster? Are there powers currently reserved to Westminster that should be devolved as part of the Brexit process?
- Is the UK Government doing enough to take account of the interests of the devolved nations? Is the Joint Ministerial Committee on EU Negotiations fit for purpose?
- Are the EU and other Member States likely to take account of the position of the devolved nations in the Brexit negotiations? How can Scotland in particular engage directly with the EU?
