What influence will the UK have on data protection after Brexit? Lords to ask Information Commissioner
The House of Lords EU Home Affairs Sub-Committee will continue taking evidence on the European Union data protection package on Wednesday 8 March. The Committee will take evidence from Elizabeth Denham, the UK's Information Commissioner.
The Committee will explore issues such as how the UK will be able to influence global data protection standards from outside the EU and what support the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) offers to small and medium-sized enterprises to help them prepare for implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation.
The Committee is likely to ask:
- What are the main channels or through which the UK is able to influence global data protection standards and how much influence does the UK have? Would you expect that to change post-Brexit?
- How much room for manoeuvre will the UK Government have in practice on data protection policy post-Brexit if it wishes to maintain ‘unhindered' flows of data with both the EU and the US?
- How important is the EU-US Privacy Shield to the UK economy?
- Which types of UK-based companies are most likely to be relying on the Privacy Shield?
The evidence session will start at 10:45am on Wednesday 8 March in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
