Citizenship inquiry: NCVO, Citizens UK, Big Lottery Fund and others discuss current state of civic engagement and barriers to participation
The House of Lords Committee on Citizenship and Civic Engagement will take evidence from NCVO, Citizens UK and Civil Society Futures, Big Lottery Fund, Charities Aid Foundation and New Philanthropy Capital at its meeting on Wednesday 15 November.
The first evidence session will start at 10:30am in Committee Room 3A of the House of Lords. Giving evidence will be:
- Sir Stuart Etherington, Chief Executive, NCVO
- Neil Jameson, Executive Director, Citizens UK
- Matthew Bolton, Civil Society Futures
At 11.30am, giving evidence will be:
- Dawn Austwick, Chief Executive, Big Lottery Fund
- Sir John Low, Chief Executive, Charities Aid Foundation
- Patrick Murray, Head of Policy and External Affairs, New Philanthropy Capital
Questions the witnesses will be asked include:
- How would you describe the current state of civic participation and civil society in the UK?
- Who isn't taking part in civil society? What are the barriers these groups face?
- What can government do to support civil society and civic engagement?
- What more could charities do to build bridges between communities and to promote social cohesion?
- Should more be expected of charities and civil society groups in terms of addressing discrimination and inequality?
