Department of Health Minister to be questioned by Lords on reciprocal healthcare after Brexit

In its final evidence session into the implications of Brexit for reciprocal healthcare, The House of Lords EU Home Affairs Sub-Committee will question Lord O'Shaughnessy, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health.

The Committee will ask the Minister what progress on reciprocal healthcare has been made during the first phase of the Brexit negotiations and how the Government intends to resolve disputes with the EU during a transitional period and in the future.

The evidence session will begin at 10:30 am on Wednesday 29 November and take place in Committee room 3 of the House of Lords.

Questions the Committee are likely to ask include:

  • After Brexit day will UK citizens currently resident in an EU Member State be likely to retain access to reciprocal healthcare arrangements should they move to another EU Member State after the UK's withdrawal?
  • Will EU citizens currently resident in the UK be likely to retain access to such arrangements should they visit an EU Member State on a temporary basis after that date?
  • Will individuals have access to dispute settlement processes, or will this be a matter to be resolved inter-governmentally?
  • Would pre-existing reciprocal healthcare arrangements with other countries simply ‘spring back to life' once we leave the EU? Has the Department for Health done any work on this?
