Brexit: competition - Lords Committee to hear evidence from competition law and state aid experts


The House of Lords EU Internal Market Sub-Committee will hear evidence from academics and lawyers on Thursday 12 October as part of its inquiry into UK competition policy post-Brexit.

The session will start at 10:10am on Thursday 12 October in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords. Giving evidence to the Committee will be:

At approximately 10:10am: 

  • Professor Richard Whish QC, Emeritus Professor of Law at King's College and Member of the Brexit Competition Law Working Group
  • Professor Eyad Maher Dabbah, Professor of Competition Law and Policy, Queen Mary University of London
  •  Professor Pinar Akman, Professor of Law, University of Leeds
  • Professor Sir John Vickers, Warden of All Souls College, Oxford, and Chair of the Brexit Competition Law Working Group

Questions will include:

  • What should competition policy in the UK set out to achieve?
  • How do you think present and future EU block exemptions should be treated under UK law?
  • Does Brexit provide an opportunity for the UK to review national interest criteria for mergers and acquisitions?
  • What provisions are necessary for a competition cooperation agreement between the EU and the UK to be effective?

  • George Peretz QC, Monckton Chambers/UK State Aid Law Association

Questions will include:

  • What are the implications of Brexit for the regulation and control of State aid in the UK?
  • Will the UK require a domestic State aid authority after Brexit?
  • What would a ‘good deal' with the EU on State aid look like for the UK?
  • What are the implications of EU withdrawal for public procurement in the UK?
