Former MI6 Chief to face questions from Lords EU Committee
On Thursday 19 October 2017 the former Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), Sir John Sawers GCMG, will give evidence to the House of Lords EU External Affairs Sub-Committee's inquiry into UK sanctions policy after Brexit.
Sir John, now the Chairman of Macro Advisory Partners, will give evidence at 11am in Room 1 of the House of Lords.
Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:
- How is information that underpins UN and EU sanctions listings shared among EU Member States and with other third countries, such as the US?
- How might post-Brexit co-operation on sanctions between the UK and the EU and its Member States work in practice?
- As opposed to the formal structures established under the Common Foreign and Security Policy, what role does informal co-ordination between like-minded countries play in foreign policy making?
- Are there EU sanctions regimes, such as on Russia or Iran, where the UK leaving would have a significant impact?
- Would you expect leaving the EU to affect the coordination of statements or of voting positions between EU Member States and the UK at the UN?
- After Brexit how can the UK maintain or enhance its influence as a global power?
- In a recent policy paper the Government sets out its aspiration for a “deep and special partnership with the EU that goes beyond existing third country arrangements”. How can this be achieved?
