Is the Government committed to protecting the environment? Lords to ask National Trust
The Select Committee on the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 will continue its inquiry with two evidence sessions on Tuesday 10 October. The Committee will hear from the National Trust and Kent Downs AONB Unit as well as a Former Chief Executive of Exmoor National Park Authority.
The Committee will consider what impact budget cuts have had on the ability of Natural England to deliver its objectives; the opportunities and risks Brexit may have for managing our natural environment and what measures the National Trust is taking to conserve biodiversity on its own land.
At 11:05am the Committee will hear evidence from:
- Mr Nick Johannsen, Director, Kent Downs AONB Unit
- Dr Nigel Stone, Former Chief Executive, Exmoor National Park Authority
At 12:05pm the Committee will hear evidence from:
- Mr Harry Bowell, Director, North, National Trust
- Dr David Bullock, Head of Species and Habitat Conservation, National Trust
Possible questions for the two sessions include:
- How might the UK's exit from the European Union affect the work of the National Trust and its partners?
- What are the opportunities and risks for conserving, managing and helping people to access nature in this country?
- What action is the National Trust taking to conserve biodiversity, and are levels of biodiversity improving or decreasing on National Trust land?
- To what extent has the loss of the CRC and RCPU affected the Government's ability to address key social and economic issues such as rural housing and rural broadband?
- To what extent have recent budget cuts affected Natural England's ability to engage in work or partnerships that help to deliver against its core objectives?
The evidence session will take place at 11:05am, Tuesday 10 October in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
