Lords Communications Committee to hear evidence on the skills needed to succeed in the UK's advertising industry

The House of Lords Communications Committee will continue to take evidence for its inquiry into the UK's advertising industry on Tuesday 24 October. The Committee will hear from industry bodies including Direct Marketing UK, the Internet Advertising Bureau UK as well as academic experts.

The purpose of the first session is to explore the wider issues facing the advertising industry regarding the development of skills needed to sustain the industry, the UK's access to international talent, and how the industry could adapt in the face of increasing digital advertising.

At 3.30pm the Committee will hear from

  • Mr Jon Mew, Chief Executive Officer, Internet Advertising Bureau UK
  • Dr Toby Syfret, Director of TV Research, Enders Analysis
  • Professor Douglas West, Professor of Marketing, King's College London

Questions the Committee are likely to ask:

  • How could immigration policy better support the advertising industry?
  • Is the current digital advertising market fair, open and competitive?
  • What regulatory or legislative measures, if any, should be adopted?
  • Where are there skills gaps in the industry?

In the second session, the Committee will question the witnesses on the measures which should be adopted by the Government to ensure that the British advertising training system can still attract the best students around the world.

The evidence session will begin at 4:30pm and the witnesses include:

  • Mr Paul Bainsfair, Director General, Institute Of Practitioners In Advertising
  • Ms Kate Burnett, Managing Director, Direct Marketing Association UK
  • Mr Raphael Salama, Account Manager, AKQA

Questions the Committee are likely to ask:

  • What educational or training routes are there for people wishing to join the advertising industry?
  • How should universities and colleges adapt their curriculum to fulfil the advertising industry's skills requirements?
  • What is the future of television, print, radio, out of home and other forms of non-digital advertising?
  • What would be the impact to the advertising industry if the pipeline of international talent was turned off or restricted?

The evidence session will begin at 3.30pm on Tuesday 24 October in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords.
