Lords EU Committee to talk ‘deal or no deal' with leading Brexit experts
The House of Lords EU Committee will tomorrow take evidence from legal, trade and academic experts on the possible impact of the UK leaving the EU without a trade deal being in place.
The evidence session will start at 16:05 on Tuesday 17 October in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords. Giving evidence will be:
- Professor Anand Menon, Professor of European politics and foreign affairs, King's College London
- Professor Catherine Barnard, Professor of European Union and Employment Law, Cambridge University
- Roderick Abbott, Senior Adviser on Trade Policy, ECIPE
Areas the session will cover include:
- Does the Prime Minister's Florence speech provide a sound basis to make process in the negotiations with the EU? What stumbling-blocks remain?
- What scenarios might result in a ‘no deal' outcome?
- Which side has most to lose or gain from ‘no deal'?
- What are the implications of ‘no deal' for Northern Ireland?
- Is the UK Government doing enough to prepare for a ‘no deal' scenario?
- Will a transition arrangement be a necessary part of any lasting agreement? What would be its legal and institutional basis?
- What would a transition period look like? Would the UK continue to pay into the EU budget during it?
- How long would any transition period be likely to last?
