Minister for Small Business, Consumers and Corporate Responsibility to be questioned by Lords on competition policy post Brexit


Margot James MP, Minister for Small Business, Consumers and Corporate Responsibility in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, appears before the House of Lords EU Internal Market Sub-Committee on Thursday 2 November 2017 as part of its inquiry into UK competition policy post-Brexit.

Margot James MP's responsibilities as Minister for Small Business, Consumers and Corporate Responsibility include: industrial strategy; European Union exit; small business and enterprise; consumer and competition (including energy retail markets and competition law); labour markets and EU structural funds.


The session will start at 10:10am on Thursday 2 November in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords. Questions are likely to include:

  • Can you set out the immediate implications of Brexit for the UK's competition policy and enforcement framework?
  • How will any increase in resources for the Competition and Markets Authority be funded?
  • Post-Brexit, what opportunities might greater freedom in relation to competition policy afford the UK?
  • Does Brexit provide an opportunity to re-examine the national interest criteria for mergers and acquisitions?
  • What provisions would the Government seek to include in a strong future cooperation agreement with the European Commission on all competition matters?
  • What models is the Government considering for State aid control in the UK post-Brexit?
  • How is the Government engaging with the Devolved Administrations on their role in the design and enforcement of UK State aid rules post-Brexit?
