The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will continue taking evidence for its inquiry into Life Sciences and the Industrial Strategy on Tuesday 24 October. Giving evidence will be representatives from NHS Foundation Trusts; industry bodies and scientific academies.

  • Keith Chantler, Director of Innovation, Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Dame Julie Moore, Chief Executive, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

In the second evidence session the Committee will hear from representative industry bodies and the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC). Giving evidence at 11:10am will be:

  • Mike Thompson, Chief Executive Officer, Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry
  • Nisha Tailor, Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Association of Medical Research Charities

In the final evidence session, the Committee will question representatives of scientific academies on how the strategy should be implemented.

These witnesses will give evidence at 12:10 and include:

  • Professor Sir Robert Lechler, President, Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS);
  • Professor Joyce Tait, Royal Society of Edinburgh
  • Prof Mark Tooley, President of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), Royal Academy of Engineering.

Topics likely to be covered across the sessions include:

  • Whether NHS budgets allow for the adoption on innovations and if there should be financial incentives to encourage this
  • If the NHS is ready for the level of innovation detailed in the strategy
  • How the life sciences strategy can be implemented, and who should be accountable
  • Opportunities for policy change post-Brexit

The evidence session will begin at 10:10am on Tuesday 24 October in Committee Room 4a of the House of Lords.
