The House of Commons agreed to an application for an emergency debate, made by Alison McGovern MP on Monday 16 April 2018.
What is an emergency debate?
An emergency debate is a debate called at short notice in the House of Commons when a matter needs to be discussed urgently. An MP may apply to the Speaker for an emergency debate under the rules of Standing Order No. 24.
Applications to the Speaker
The Speaker received applications for an emergency debate on military action in Syria. He wrote to Theresa May MP explaining why an application from Alison McGovern MP was likely to be accepted ahead of the Prime Minister’s application.
