Urgent Question on the proposed merger of Sainsbury's and Asda
30 April 2018 (updated on 30 April 2018)
Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Rebecca Long-Bailey, asked an Urgent Question in the House of Commons on the proposed merger of Sainsbury's and Asda.
The question was responded to by Andrew Griffiths, who clarified that there are no planned Sainsbury’s or Asda store closures as a result of the merger and the proposed deal is conditional on clearance by the Competition and Markets Authority.
Rebecca Long-Bailey pressed the Government, asking the Minister if he will use his powers to broaden the scope of the public interest test to include deals of such economic and national significance?
