Lords examines Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill

The Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill had its third reading, a chance to 'tidy up' the bill and make changes, in the Lords on Wednesday 13 June.

Members discussed subjects including the definition of local authorities and the provision of public refueling points by large fuel retailers.

Lords report stage: Tuesday 5 June

Members discussed a range of subjects, including insurance arrangements for automated vehicles, determining the criteria for a vehicle to be considered safe for self-driving and regulations to ensure refuelling points are installed in all new residential and commercial developments. 

Third reading, a chance to 'tidy up' the bill and make changes, is scheduled for 13 June.

Members discussed the installation and location of public charging and refuelling points, the distinction between 'electric vehicles' and 'zero-emission vehicles' and the impact of the bill on the government's ability to meet air quality targets.

Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill summary

This bill aims to enable UK consumers to benefit from improvements in transport technology by creating:

  • a new liability scheme for insurers in relation to automated vehicles
  • regulations relating to the installation and operation of charging points for electric vehicles
  • a regulatory framework for new technology to be invented, designed, made and used in the UK
