Lords debates higher education as an export

Members of the Lords, including a former independent adjudicator for higher education and the chair of the Higher Education Commission, debated the value to the UK of higher education as an export, in the House of Lords on Thursday 19 July.

This was a balloted debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Lord Norton of Louth (Conservative), chair of the Higher Education Commission.

Members who took part included:

  • Baroness Deech (Crossbench), former independent adjudicator for higher education
  • Lord Holmes of Richmond (Conservative), chancellor of BBP University
  • Lord Parekh (Labour), member of court for the universities of Hull and Bedfordshire
  • Lord Storey (Liberal Democrat), former chair of Burton Manor Adult Education College

The Bishop of Chichester (Bishops), made his maiden speech. 

Viscount Younger of Leckie (Conservative), Lords spokesperson for higher education in the Department for Education, responded on behalf of the government.
