Lords debates UK overseas aid

Members of the Lords, including a trustees of the Chalker Foundation for health and community projects in Africa and a member of the advisory committee for the Africa International Business Forum, debated the steps being taken by the government to engage with small charities and faith-based organisations in delivering UK aid overseas in the House of Lords on Thursday 12 June.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Baroness Stroud (Conservative), CEO of the Legatum Institute.

Members taking part included:

  • Baroness Barker (Liberal Democrat), director of Barking and Woodall Consulting Ltd (strategic advice for charities)
  • Baroness Hodgson of Abinger (Conservative), trustee of the Chalker Foundation (health and community projects in Africa)
  • Lord Sheikh (Conservative), member of the advisory committee for the Africa International Business Forum
  • Baroness Smith of Basildon (Labour), former Cabinet Office minister for the third sector

Lord McNicol of West Kilbride (Labour), made his maiden speech.

Lord Bates (Conservative), minister of state in the Department for International Development, responded on behalf of the government.
