Statement on immigration detention - Shaw Review : 24 July 2018
24 July 2018 (updated on 24 July 2018)
The Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, made a statement in the House of Commons on immigration detention and the Shaw Review.
The Home Secretary gave details on Stephen Shaw’s second independent review of immigration detention, which was commissioned by the Government. The Secretary concluded that the Shaw review confirmed that the Government was on the right track with its reforms on immigration detention and that his goal is to ensure the UK's immigration system, including immigration detention, is fair and humane.
Shadow Home Secretary, Diane Abbott, responded on behalf of the Opposition and stated that the Opposition understood that some type of immigration detention must form part of the UK's immigration system, "we believe that the sooner immigration detention moves back to the system that Members of Parliament were promised in the 1990s [...] it will be a better day—not just for the detainees but for this Government and for the British people and our reputation for fairness and humanity".
