Statement on Combat Air Strategy: 17 July 2018

Secretary of State for Defence, Gavin Williamson, made a statement on Tuesday 17 July 2018 on Combat Air Strategy.
The Secretary of State updated the House on the Combat Air Strategy which was announced to the House on 21 February 2018. The Secretary highlighted how the strategy would be delivered. He stated that the Government would work with wider government, industry and international partners to deliver the strategy by taking the several steps. These would include: investing in upgrading Typhoon, to generate UK intellectual property by the implementation of the future combat air system technology initiative and to work together to achieve a more open and sustainable industrial base that invests in its own future to break the cycle of increasing cost and length of time to introduce new fighter aircraft.
Shadow Secretary of State for Defence, Nia Griffith, responded on behalf of the Opposition. The Shadow Secretary commented on how the strategy has been published at a time of great uncertainty in the aerospace industry about the impact of Brexit. The Shadow Secretary went on to state that Members from across the House were still awaiting the publication of the Government's modernising defence programme.
