Lords debates 150th anniversary of the Trade Union Congress

Members of the Lords, including a former general secretary of the Trade Union Congress and a former deputy general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union, debated the 150th anniversary of the first Trade Union Congress and the contribution made by trade unions to industrial, social and political reform in the United Kingdom and internationally, in the House of Lords on Thursday 14 June.
This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.
The debate was proposed by Baroness Prosser (Labour), former deputy general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union.
Members taking part included:
- Lord Fox (Liberal Democrat), Lords Liberal Democrat spokesperson in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
- Lord Monks (Labour), former general secretary of the TUC and the European Trade Union Confederation
Lord Henley (Conservative), parliamentary under-secretary in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, responded on behalf of the government.
