Members of the Lords, including the former vice-chair of the Refugee Council and the former chair of the Commission on the Future of Multi-Ethnic Britain, debated the impact of the government’s 'hostile environment' approach towards illegal immigration on those with residency and employment rights, in the House of Lords on Thursday 14 June.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Lord Bassam of Brighton (Labour), former leader of Brighton and Hove Council.

Members taking part included:

  • Baroness Flather (Crossbench), former vice-chair of the Refugee Council
  • Baroness Hamwee (Liberal Democrat), Lords Liberal Democrat spokesperson for immigration
  • Lord Parekh (Labour), former chair of the Commission on the Future of Multi-Ethnic Britain
  • Lord Suri (Conservative), president of the Conservative Ethnic Diversity Council

Baroness Williams of Trafford (Party), minister of state in the Home Office, responded on behalf of the government.
