Statement on US steel and aluminium import tariffs: 4 June 2018

On 4 June 2018 Liam Fox, the Secretary of State for International Trade, made a statement on the imposition of steel and aluminium Import tariffs by the United States.

The minister expressed disappointment at the imposition of tariffs by the US on aluminium and steel imports from the European Union and stated that the Government would continue to work with the European Commission and EU member states on a response. The minister stated that the Government would press for an EU-wide exemption from the tariffs and encouraged UK suppliers to seek product exemptions.

Shadow Energy and Climate Change Minister, Barry Gardiner, responded on behalf of the Opposition, questioning the Government's record on the UK steel industry and pressing the minister to ensure that the matter is given a high priority at the upcoming G7 summit.
