Alistair Burt, Minister of State at the Department for International Development made a statement in the House of Commons on Monday 12 March 2018 on the protection of civilians in Afrin, a city in north-western Syria, near the border with Turkey.

The Minister told the House that, "the Government have called for de-escalation and the protection of civilians, while recognising Turkey’s legitimate interest in the security of its borders".

Responding on behalf of the Opposition, Shadow International Development Secretary Kate Osamor said, "time and again, those fighting in Syria are consistently failing to take precautions that protect civilians".
