Members of the Lords, including a former Chief of Defence Staff and international relations experts, debated the centenary of the Armistice at the end of the First World War, in the House of Lords on Monday 5 November.

This was a general debate. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Lord Ashton of Hyde (Conservative), parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Members debated a range of issues including the contribution of soldiers from the Indian Subcontinent and the importance of learning the lessons of the war. Lord Ashton of Hyde, responsible for First World War commemorations at DCMS, responded on behalf of the government saying: ‘we have had a most moving, measured and dignified debate and I am most grateful to all noble Lords across the House for their contributions, which appropriately reflected the gravity of the subject under discussion'.
