Opposition asks Government about police pensions and police cuts

Louise Haigh asked about police pension liabilities and the National Police Chiefs Council-threatened legal action against the Government.
Home Office Minister Nick Hurd responded on behalf of the Government and stated that the changes to the discount rate that applies to the pensions were mentioned in the 2018 Budget. This change will lead to increased employer pension contribution costs for all unfunded public sector pensions, including those of police forces. He went on to state that officials were in discussions with representatives from the NPCC and the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners to discuss how this additional funding could be distributed. He also stated that the Government would review police spending power ahead of announcing the police funding settlement for 2019-20 in early December.
The Shadow policing Minister, Louise Haigh, responded to Mr Hurd and asked for a firm commitment from the Government that it would meet the full cost of the pension changes and to meet the £165 million cost that the Government have left the police to pick up next year.
