Lords debates early intervention in children's lives

Members of the Lords, including the president of the National Children's Bureau and the vice-president of Barnardo's, debated initiatives in early intervention in children's lives that would improve the welfare, life chances and social mobility of young people in the UK, in the House of Lords on Thursday 1 November.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Baroness Massey of Darwen (Labour), former director of the Health Education Council's Young People's Programme

Members taking part included:

  • Lord Farmer (Conservative), associate governor of ARK All Saints Academy, Camberwell
  • Lord Loomba (Crossbench), vice-president of children's charity Barnardo's
  • Baroness Morgan of Huyton (Labour), chair of the Ambition School Leadership educational charity for disadvantaged children
  • Baroness Tyler of Enfield (Liberal Democrat), president of the National Children's Bureau

Lord Agnew of Oulton (Conservative), parliamentary under-secretary in the Department for Education, responded on behalf of the government.
