Shadow Home Secretary questions the Government on Windrush

Shadow Home Secretary, Diane Abbott, asked an urgent question on the Government's policy on the Windrush generation.
Immigration Minister, Caroline Nokes responded on behalf of the Government and stated that the Government has established a Windrush scheme, which ensures that members of the Windrush generation, their children born in the UK and those who arrived in the UK as minors and others who have been in the United Kingdom for a long period of time will be able to obtain the documents to confirm their status and, in appropriate cases, obtain British citizenship free of charge. The Immigration Minister also went on to state that the Home Secretary has commissioned a lessons learned review which has appointed Wendy Williams as an independent adviser to work on the review to requires independent oversight and scrutiny .
Now we have learnt that three citizens have died in Jamaica after having been wrongfully deported from this country. This is something that ought to shame Ministers. Worse, we did not learn this from our own Government. This intelligence comes from Her Excellency the Foreign Minister for Jamaica, Kamina Johnson-Smith.
Diane Abbott also commented on how the Home Secretary has made an apology to 18 of the victims identified who have been wrongly detained or deported. This is despite the fact that the Government having identified 164 such victims.
She stated there was a need for the Government to abandon the current hostile environment policy to prevent further incidents.
