Update on UK Government efforts to restore Northern Ireland Government

Karen Bradley, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, made a statement in the House of Commons on 6 September 2018 updating MPs on UK Government efforts to restore the Northern Ireland Government.
The Northern Ireland Government - known as the Executive - collapsed in January 2017 following a break-down in relations between the political parties in Northern Ireland.
The Secretary of State informed the House that she had taken the decision to "take the steps necessary to reduce Assembly Members' salaries". She concluded, "Be in no doubt that no agreement can ever be imposed from outside Northern Ireland. It must be reached by those closest to these issues—those who have been elected to represent the people of Northern Ireland".
Bradley's opposite number, Tony Lloyd, welcomed the decision on MLA pay, but said, "This is a small step, and in general terms, guardedly, we will look to support the Secretary of State where appropriate. However, she must do more to break the logjam".
