Foreign Office Minister, Sir Alan Duncan, made a statement to the House of Commons on the situation in Venezuela following the news that a border crossing has been blocked ahead of a humanitarian aid delivery.

The Minister told MPs that the UK recognised Juan Guaido as the constitutional interim President of Venezuela. He said the Venezuelan people were showing their discontent with mass protests across the country and stressed that the UK was not alone in its condemnation of the Maduro regime.

He stated the next steps were to provide support to multilateral organisations such as the UN and Red Cross, and to keep up the pressure on Maduro with "one united voice".

Responding on behalf of the Opposition, Shadow Minister Liz McInnes condemned the Maduro regime, claiming that it's response to rising public anger had been to increase violence, oppression and abuses of human rights.

The Minister pressed the government to commit that there would be no military intervention, or other form of outside interference in Venezuela.
