Government updates MPs on plans for the defence estate
28 February 2019 (updated on 28 February 2019)
Tobias Elwood, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Defence People and Veterans, has updated the House of Commons on 'A Better Defence Estate'.
'A Better Defence Estate' is a strategy launched in 2016 that aims to "achieve a more efficient, modern and capability focused defence estate".
The Minister told the House that the UK defence estate was "unwieldy" and expensive to run and outlined which facilities the Government intends to dispose of and which will now be retained having previously been slated for closure.
Shadow Defence Secretary Nia Griffith noted that closing facilities that host reservists may have a negative impact on the recruitment of reservists.
