Government announce 'landmark' Domestic Abuse Bill in statement

The Government has announced a new 'landmark' Domestic Abuse Bill. The Bill will set out to set definitions of the many forms of abuse, improve protections and support for survivors and bring in stronger punishments for offenders.

Atkins told MPs;

 "This Bill gives us an opportunity to ensure our legislation keeps pace [with our understanding of domestic abuse.]"

Victoria Atkins went on to say that the victims of domestic abuse in all parts of the United Kingdom deserve effective protection and support, and that the Bill as introduced will contain a bespoke domestic abuse offence for Northern Ireland.

Responding on behalf of the Opposition, Shadow Minister Carolyn Harris said,

"We will be seeking assurances over the authority and funding of the domestic abuse commissioner."

She followed up on the statement by asking the Government about how the Bill will effect migrant women, the impact of domestic abuse on children and funding for women refuges.
