On Thursday 11 July, members of the House of Lords debated the case for creating an environment which encourages business growth and job creation, especially in relation to the tax system.

Members taking part included a former spokesperson for business, innovation and skills and an advisory board member of Silicon Valley Bank.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Baroness Neville-Rolfe (Conservative), former commercial secretary in HM Treasury.

Members taking part included:

  • Lord Haskel (Labour), former member of the Lords Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Committee
  • Baroness Kramer (Liberal Democrat), Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Treasury and economy
  • Lord Popat (Conservative), former government spokesperson for business, innovation and skills
  • Lord St John of Blesto (Crossbench), advisory board member of Silicon Valley Bank

Lord Henley (Conservative), parliamentary under-secretary in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, responded on behalf of the government.
