Urgent question on NHS pensions
8 July 2019 (updated on 8 July 2019)
MP for South West Bedfordshire, Andrew Selous, asked an urgent question on tax treatment of NHS pensions and its impact on service provision.
The urgent question follows news of hospital operation waiting lists increasing due to Government changes to pensions. Andrew Selous, MP for South West Bedfordshire, asked an urgent question in the House of Commons on the issue.
Liz Truss, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, responded to the urgent question and said:
"The Secretary of State for Health is currently in discussions with senior representatives from the BMA and the Government is taking this situation very seriously."
Liz Truss went on to say that
"It's simply not possible to have different tax rules for senior clinicians in the NHS compared to everyone else."
Responding to the Government, Andrew Selous replied:
"The unforeseen consequences of recent pensions legislation, initially supported on all sides of this House, are now resulting in very worrying consequences for the NHS as hospital doctors who've regularly worked weekend overtime in order to get waiting lists down are understandably refusing to continue to do so because they are being made worse off as a result."
