Government statement on consultation response to debt relief policy

A 2017 campaign promise for the Conservative Party, the Breathing Space Scheme, would offer individuals with problem debt legal an opportunity to better manage their finances and consider their options.

Announcing the consultation in October 2018, the Government said;

"Breathing space would give someone in problem debt the right to legal protections from creditor action while they receive debt advice and enter an appropriate debt solution."

Following the conclusion of the consultation, the Treasury's Economic Secretary, John Glen, made a statement in the Commons Chamber.

"Millions of people struggle with problem debt and the burdens it brings. The Government has committed to helping these people take control of their finances and get back on a stable financial footing."

The minister's opposite number, Jonathan Reynolds, said;

"There is a lot to do. This statement is a move in the right direction today, but let's make sure we keep going in that direction."
