MP for Orkney and Shetland, Alistair Carmichael asked an urgent question in the Commons today on the situation in Hong Kong.

Mark Field, Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific, responded to the urgent question and said:

"I can assure the House that the UK Government is, and will remain, fully committed to the preservation of Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy."

Responding to the Government, Alistair Carmichael told MPs:

"There are literally millions of people in Hong Kong who follow the proceedings in this House, who look to us for support in their fight to protect their human rights. It matters to them that we here remember their position."
