Government asked about its Transforming Rehabilitation programme
4 March 2019 (updated on 4 March 2019)
Following a critical report by the National Audit Office, Shadow Justice Secretary, Richard Burgon will ask the Government about its probation reforms.
The National Audit Office (NAO) last week published a report on the Transforming Rehabilitation programme. The NAO stated that the number of individuals on short sentences recalled to jail had increased and that the cost for the termination of contracts with private probation companies would cost at least £171million.
Publishing the report, the NAO concluded:
"The Ministry [of Justice] set itself up to fail in how it approached the Transforming Rehabilitation reforms. It needs to pause and reflect on its proposed approach to provide assurance that its plans are deliverable."
Rory Stewart the Minister of State for the Ministry of Justice, responded for the Government, outlining the challenges and background of the Transforming Rehabilitation scheme, as well as the Department's response to the NAO report.
