Conservative MP, Mark Francois  MP asked an urgent question on what checks the House of Commons has over the powers of the ‘Joint Committee' contained in the proposed EU Withdrawal Agreement.

Kwasi Kwarteng MP, The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union replied to the urgent question on behalf of the Government and stated:

"The Withdrawal Agreement provides for a Joint Committee comprising representatives of the UK and the EU to govern the implementation and application of the withdrawal agreement...[the Joint Committee] cannot act if the UK does not agree."

Mark Francois replied to the Minister/Secretary and asked him to clarify:

"What checks and balances this House has over the operation of the Committee?"

Transcripts of today's proceedings will be available on Hansard three hours after they take place.
