On Thursday 7 March, members of the House of Lords debated International Women's Day and the UK's role in advancing gender equality globally.

Members taking part included the chair of the Gender Action for Peace & Security (Gaps) Advisory Board and the former chair of the Women's National Commission.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Baroness Williams of Trafford (Conservative), minister for equalities in the Department for International Development.

Members taking part included:

  • Baroness Burt of Solihull (Liberal Democrat), vice-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Women and Work
  • Baroness Crawley (Labour), former chair of the Women's National Commission
  • Baroness Hodgson of Abinger (Conservative), chair of the Gender Action for Peace & Security (Gaps) Advisory Board
  • Lord Loomba (Crossbench), founder and chairman of global widows support charity The Loomba Foundation

Baroness Vere of Norbiton (Conservative), government whip and former executive director of the Girls' Schools Association, responded on behalf of the government.
