On Thursday 23 May, members of the House of Lords debated the case for increasing the social value of public procurement by aligning it with the government's Civil Society Strategy.

Members taking part included a trustee of social policy thinktank Demos and the chair of the Public Services Strategy Board at the Confederation of British Industry.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Baroness McGregor-Smith (Conservative), chair of the Public Services Strategy Board at the Confederation of British Industry.

Members taking part included:

  • Baroness Finn (Conservative), trustee of social policy thinktank Demos
  • Lord Haskel (Labour), former member of the Lords Financial Exclusion Committee (2016-17)
  • Lord Pickles (Conservative), former Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government
  • Lord Shipley (Liberal Democrat), former director of the Northern Development Company

Lord Young of Cookham (Conservative), Lords spokesperson in the Cabinet Office, responded on behalf of the government.
