Lords debates increase in social housing

On Thursday 31 January, members of the House of Lords debated the case for a long-term commitment to increased provision of social housing to help to reduce housing costs, homelessness and housing benefit expenditure. Members taking part included the chair of the Affordable Housing Commission and a trustee of national support charity Homeless Link.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.
The debate was proposed by Lord Whitty (Labour), former chair of affordable homes campaign Housing Voice.

Baroness Osamor (Labour), former deputy leader of Haringey Council, made her maiden speech.
Lord Young of Cookham (Conservative), Lords spokesperson in the Cabinet Office, responded on behalf of the government.
