In the first sitting week of 2019, the House of Commons approved the third reading of the Finance (No.3) Bill and resumed the debate prior to next weeks 'meaningful vote'.

Finance (No. 3) Bill
The House of Commons approved the third reading of the Finance (No.3) Bill. The debate focused on austerity and Brexit, and an Opposition amendment pertaining to Brexit was approved by division 303 to 296. Amendment 7, tabled by Yvette Cooper, limits the ability of the Government to levy taxes without Parliamentary approval in the instance of a no-deal Brexit.
Following the approval of this amendment, the Opposition opted not to oppose the third reading of the Finance (No.3) Bill and it passed without division.

'Meaningful vote' debates
Parliament returned this week to debate the 'meaningful vote' which is scheduled to take place next Tuesday 15 January following its postponement in December 2018. Three days debate have taken place, with MPs speaking in support of and against the Prime Minister's deal.

Two Private Members Bills were brought to the house via Ten Minute Rule Motions. Dame Louise Ellman presented a Bill on International Development Assistance (Palestinian National Authority Schools) and Leo Docherty presented his 10 Minute Rule Motion on Armed Forces (Derogation from European Convention on Human Rights).
