Chancellor delivers Spending Round 2019
4 September 2019 (updated on 4 September 2019)
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sajid Javid, has delivered the 2019 Spending Round to Members of Parliament.
The Spending Round will set departmental budgets for 2020-21. A full multi-year Spending Review is now due to take place in 2020.
The Chancellor told MPs;
"Mr Speaker, to keep spending under control we will of course set a high bar for funding projects, and they'll have to show real value for money with credible delivery plans and budgets, starting with the Government's rapid review of HS2. We'll target that investment and national priorities like regional growth and decarbonisation.
"So yes Mr Speaker we'll use the Government's resources to kick start the infrastructure revolution, but we'll also do more to give private investors the confidence to back these projects too."
Responding on behalf of the Opposition, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer John McDonnell said;
"Let me thank the Chancellor for abiding by the convention of providing me with a copy of his statement. It was a compendium of meaningless platitudes."
