Lords debates recent work of Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament

Members of the House of Lords debated recent work of the Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament (ISC) on Monday 9 September. Members taking part included a former reviewer of counter-terrorism legislation and a former deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.

The ISC has responsibility for the oversight of the UK intelligence community. The Intelligence Services Act 1994 created the committee, with the Justice and Security Act 2013 extending its powers and remit.
This was a general debate. During debates members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.
This debate took place in Grand Committee, a room outside the Lords chamber. Any member can take part, as with debates in the chamber.
The debate was proposed by the Marquess of Lothian (Conservative), current member of the ISC.

- Lord Kennedy of Southwark (Labour), shadow spokesperson for housing and communities and local government
- Lord Paddick (Liberal Democrat), former deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police
Baroness Williams of Trafford (Conservative), minister of state in the Home Office, responded on behalf of the government.
