On Tuesday 25 February members debated trade deal negotiations, the Horizon Accounting System, Indian citizenship and Traveller communities. The debates took place in Grand Committee, away from the chamber.

These were short debates (‘Questions for Debate’) expected to last for an hour. They are a chance for members to discuss policy issues and raise matters of concern.

Trade Standards Commission

This debate was proposed by Baroness McIntosh of Pickering (Conservative), president of the UK Warehousing Association

Members discussed what steps the government is taking to establish a trade standards commission in advance of negotiating trade deals.

Horizon Accounting System

This debate was proposed by Lord Berkeley (Labour), former public affairs manager for Eurotunnel.

Members considered the judgment in Bates v Post Office and whether the government intends to take any action against the directors responsible for the Horizon Accounting System.

Indian citizenship

This debate was proposed by the Earl of Sandwich (Crossbench), adviser to CARE International.

Members debated the impact of India’s Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019, passed on 11 December 2019 on UK citizens and what representations the government has made to the government of India as a result.

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities

This debate was proposed by the Baroness Whitaker (Labour), former consultant to the Commission for Racial Equality.

Members discussed steps to implement the recommendations of the report by the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee, 'Tackling inequalities faced by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities'.
