What committees are electing a Chair?

The posts of 27 committee chairs are up for election following the dissolution of Parliament in November 2019.

These include 20 departmental select committees plus Environmental Audit, Exiting the European Union, Petitions, Procedure, Public Accounts, Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs and Standards.  

The Chair of the Backbench Committee, elected by the House but under a different Standing Order, is also up for election. The nominations process for the Backbench Committee is slightly different.

How do Chair elections work?

Since 2010, most committee chairs have been elected by the whole House, by a system of alternative vote and by secret ballot. 

Members from the relevant party may put forward their names, but must be supported by 15 nominations from their own party, or nominations from 10 per cent of all the Members elected to the House for their party, whichever is fewer.

Nominations may also include up to five signatures of Members elected to the House as members of any party other than to which the chair is allocated or of no party.
