Statement on Windrush lessons learned review

Priti Patel: "Windrush scandal is an ugly stain on the face of our country and on the Home Office."

Home Secretary, Priti Patel told the House "the Windrush scandal is an ugly stain on the face of our country and on the Home Office."

She told the House that the independent report "laid bare institutional failings over several decades, that let down so many who had given so much to Britain."

Speaking about the report she said:

"It was damning about the conduct of the Home Office and unequivocal about the institutional ignorance and thoughtlessness towards the issues of race and the history of the Windrush generation."

The Home Secretary told that house that she promises "to listen and act to reform the culture of the Home Office to better represent the communities that we serve."

The Home Secretary went on to say the three sub-groups have been established to look at how to implement the recommendations, how to design the new community fund, and how best to work with the new commission on race and ethnic disparities.

Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Thomas-Symonds started by telling the House that the "Windrush scandal must lead to real and lasting change."

He told the House that "the review powerfully exposed some of the terrible situations people were forced into." Mr Thomas-Symonds added that it was "shocking that just 60 people received compensation from the Windrush compensation scheme in its first year of operation."

He asked the Home Secretary to confirm "how many people the Home Office estimate are eligible for the Windrush compensation scheme? As of today how many have applied? And of those how many are from Commonwealth countries or related to them?"
